Everybody seems to go ballistic because of a scare over melamine. The melamine-contaminated milk scandal has rocked many parts of the world as well. And just recently, public health officials discovered melamine not just in milk but in instant coffee, milk tea, and other products that contain non-dairy creamer. This has lead the government to collect samples of products in the market for testing and meeting retailers and coming out of lists of products positive of melamine contamination. In the light of the melamine scare worldwide, is our government handling the situation all too well? Or are we dealing it too slow and too conservative?
Melamine is just one of the contaminated foods that has flooded our country over the last decades. This one has just taken a lot of attention because of its worlwide effect. But in our country, a lot of reported toxic products have sprawled to our people. A review of the country’s trade policies should be taken into consideration to ensure food safety. The trade policies and our system of importing of food products (which oftentimes disregard food safety) should be revamped. And as for me, woe to the food products from China for the time being.
